Fashion is a system of symbols and signs that communicates a wide range of personal, cultural, and social meanings. The design of clothing, accessories, and cosmetics is often influenced by the development of technology. For example, after the invention of cheap color printing in the 1960s, a fashion revolution was ignited by high fashion designers who began to produce ready-to-wear lines that were heavily advertised in mainstream women’s and men’s magazines. At the same time, new engineering materials and fabric finishing techniques were introduced that enabled clothing manufacturers to make garments in a quicker, cheaper, and more efficient manner, while maintaining or even increasing quality standards.
A key element of fashion is the creation and production of patterns, either hand drawn on paper or programmed as computer instructions, that guide the sewing or assembly of individual components of a garment. Patterns must be designed to accommodate a wide variety of body sizes because the proportions of the human figure change with increases or decreases in weight.
Once a fashion has reached the introduction stage, it begins to lose popularity and may eventually be deemed “out of fashion.” However, in due course, similar styles often come back into fashion as people long for something they once had.
While there are numerous positive points to be made about the fashion industry, it is also important to remember that excessive production of clothes and beauty products creates waste materials that pollute the environment. In addition, some of the more glamorized aspects of the fashion industry can promote unhealthy lifestyles and lead to negative social interactions. Fashion is a complex and ever-changing phenomenon that is constantly seeking inspiration and innovation, which makes it an interesting subject to study. It is no wonder that entire magazines are devoted to it, and that it influences the way we dress, live, and interact with one another.
